Mortars and plasters – creating strength

Lime has been used in building construction and restoration for thousands of years to create durable enhancers, fillers, mortar and plaster.

Mortars

Lime benefits mortar and plaster in both the plastic and hardened state – enhancing workability and water retention in the plaster in the plastic state and reacting with carbon dioxide to regenerate calcium carbonate (limestone), in the hardened state.

This is a slow, gradual process that increases the hardness of the finished surface and allows for the closing of hairline cracks. Since initial strength is needed in most applications, additives such as gypsum, cement or pozzolan’s are mixed with lime to create a cement-like product.

Mortars

Graymont also manufactures dried limestone chip, Industrial Fine Lime and Taylocarb® in various size fractions for use in textured plasters or mortar mixes. Please contact us for more information.
